We conducted a survey on the numbers of residents in four geriatric health services facilities in Sapporo in August 1998, and we examined the reasons for people being admitted to and being discharged from the facilities based on information obtained from residents' records. We also examined the reasons for admission, continued care and discharge at one geriatric health services facility during 1998. The results showed that geriatric health services facilities had a role of service including intermediate facilities and these for providing assistance at home in longterm care.
