In relation to the patients' survival, after the whole series had been classified into cases having a rate of cells exceeding 4c nuclear DNA content of less than 10% (Group A:n=48) and those with a rate of over 10% (Group B: n=55), the relationship between the effects of preoperative chemotherapy and the survival data was investigated. According to the changes in mean DNA content and MI after chemotherapy, Group A was classified into two groups: i, decrease in both parameters (n=29); ii, increase in mean DNA content and decreased MI (n=19). On the other hand, Group B was classified into four groups:i (n=23) and ii (n=15) classified according to the same criteria as groups i and ii in Group A respectively; iii, increase in both parameters (n=6); iv, no change in mean DNA content and decreased MI or no change (n=11). Regarding patients' survival, Group A had good survival rates with favorable changes of cell kinetics (93.1% for group i and 94.7% for group ii). The groups within Group B, determined according to chemotherapeutic effect on cell kinetics, had different survival rates. The survival rates of group i and ii were better than those of group iii and iv (73.7% for group i, 77.1% for group ii, 0% for group iii and 45.5% for group iv). From these results, it appears that image analysis of nuclear DNA content in combination with MI is useful for assessment of the effects of preoperative chemotherapy on cancer cell kinetics.
