That is because“Medicalization of the end-of-life”may result in the abandonment of patients that cannot be saved by medical treatments, or in the perverse insistence on providing those patients medical treatments regardless of the efficacy. Thus they may be prevented from experiencing their death as an integral part of their own lives. This situation in which they are put today is called“Loss of death”in France. On the other hand, we moderns in general have made death taboo, and are living in a constant, unconscious attempt to avoid thinking about it. The causes of such denial of death are thought to be the influence mainly of the individualism, the trend toward the nuclear family, the aspiration of society to happiness or progress and the secularization of society. These conditions make it very difficult for us to take back our own death, for ourselves. But in order to live the end-of-life satisfactorily, it is necessary to experience our death as an integral part of our own lives, with our close relatives and medical personnel. And for that purpose, the palliative care for the patient and the accompaniment of him are thought extremely important in France. The most important things to end-of-life patients are to protect their dignity and guarantee the quality of their lives. 内容記述 | In France, in order to solve the various ethical problems concerning end-of-life, French society has been trying to make clear the historical or social sources at their root. It is thought that those problems have been brought about by the“Medicalization of the end-of-life”or the“Medicalization of death”, which is an attitude toward patients based on the mechanism. Therefore, it is stipulated by law that to receive them should be the right of every patient. The most important things to end-of-life patients are to protect their dignity and guarantee the quality of their lives. For that purpose, we should not try in vain to resist death, but should pursue what values are not lost by death, for example, richness of the mind, solidarity with the surrounding people, the love for others and so on, shouldn’t we? | |||||
